BEN TEMPLESMITH
| 06.07.2006 |
"Born in 1978, Ben hails from Perth, Australia where he attended Curtin University of Technology and recieved a degree in Design. As commercial illustrator his most notable works are 30 Days of Night and Singularity 7, the first thing he actually wrote and illustrated himself. He has also worked on Star Wars, Army of Darkness, Silent Hill and Buffy: The Vampire properties along with artwork for music bands and concept art for movies." by Templesmith.com Published in March 2006 by IDW, SHADOWPLAY - "Demon Father John's Pinwheel Blues" is born, written by Amber with Ben Templesmith's art. ---------------- Marilyn: Hi Ben. First of all congratulations for SHADOWPLAY. I really liked it. Ben Templesmith: Hiya Marilyn, many thanks on Shadowplay. Glad you liked it! Marilyn: How do you work on a story? BT: I get a script via email, and pretty much, I go to work on what the script tells me too. Once the art is done ( I use a combination of drawing and painting by hand and scanning, coloring and layering textures in photoshop ), I'll show it and see if any corrections need to be made. Then off to the printer it goes. Marilyn: Could we say that your drawings are the reproduction of the writer's imagination? BT: Well, not really. I can't see that well into a writer's head. If the writer is good though, you'll get a great approximation of what they were intending though. It's more of a collaboration between what the writer sees and what the artist sees in response to the script. Marilyn: How much time do you need to draw a comic book like "Shadowplay"? BT: Never enough! Generally it was a couple weeks each month to do each "episode". Marilyn: How was it to work with Amber on this project? BT: Went very well I thought. No hiccups and Amber's scripts were really easy to work from. Very evocative stuff. Marilyn: What do you think about Amber, the Artist? BT: I thought her script was great, and the story very interesting. Marilyn: What about your current and future projects? BT: Currently I'm redesigning my website, www.templesmith.com and working on several comics at once. One is an award nominated crime comic with Warren Ellis, called FELL, and the other is a twisted little horror comic I both write and draw, called WORMWOOD: GENTLEMAN CORPSE. There's a lot more that keeps me far too busy, but those are the big ones. Once they're done, I'm going to try and get some regular sleep! Marilyn: Could you say a few words to Amber's fans? BT: Hello. Err, hope you liked my collaboration with her! Marilyn: Thank you very much Ben for your time and your kindness. BT: Many thanks! Copyrights 2006, Marilyn & Benson Entertainment.
